Frequently Asked Questions
Sugaring FAQS
Q: What is sugaring?
A: The art of body hair removal has gone back in time to what is known as body sugaring. This type of technique has been around for thousands of years by the Egyptians and was practiced throughout Europe for centuries. The paste is completely natural and is made up of sugar, lemon and water. It looks somewhat like honey but a bit thicker. During the process of sugaring, the paste is molded to the skin and removed with a flicking motion. This technique allows the hairs to be removed in the natural direction of your hair growth to avoid breakage and ingrowns. The sugar paste is highly sanitary and environmentally friendly.
Q: How often should I come in for a sugaring appointment?
A: Not everyone’s hair growth is on the same stage which can play a major role in the time you return for your next appointment. However, we recommend maintaining a regular and consistent schedule of 3-4 weeks for optimal results. Always note that an extra week makes a world of difference when it relates to the growth after 4/5 weeks. Here is an estimated duration of how long each area will last before returning for your next appointment.
- Full Face - 4-5 weeks
- Full Legs - 4-6 weeks
- Bikini/Brazilian - 4-5 weeks
- Underarm - 2-3 weeks
- Chin/Upper lip - 2 weeks
Q: I'm not sure if I have enough growth to get sugared; what length should my hair be?
Q: Can I get sugared when I am pregnant?
A: CONGRATULATIONS! Yes, you can but we recommend consulting with your doctor first before attending your appointment.
Q: Can I get sugared while menstruating?
A: Yes, you can wear a tampon or cup in while we get you hair free. However, it is very important to note that the session may be a little bit more sensitive while getting sugared.
Q: How do I prepare for my appointment?
A: You should be mindful of a few things before we get sugared and these are:
- Do not exfoliate on the day of or day before your appointment. At least 48hrs before.
- Ensure that you are moisturising daily to soften the skin (example with jojoba/grapeseed oil). This helps to achieve a healthy skin and prevent ingrowns.
- No lotion, oils, deodorants on any of the areas to be sugared
- Avoid consuming caffeinated beverages, alcohol etc
- Wear loose clothing to your appointment
- Allow hairs to grow at least 3 weeks after shaving
- Make a 50% deposit 72hrs after booking to confirm and secure your slot
Q: Do I need to know anything after getting sugared?
A: Most definitely! This is as important as your preparation.
- No sweating for 24hrs after getting sugared. This includes no gym/working out/no sex
- Allow your pores to do their thing so no lotions, deodorants for at least 24hrs
- Exfoliate 48hrs after appointment. You can use exfoliating gloves or dry brush
- Continuous ingrowns means the hairs are unable to come to the surface due to dead skin cells buildup. Be sure to change your exfoliating gloves every 3 weeks. Invest in proper body scrubs.
Q: Does sugaring hurt more than waxing?
A: If it will be your first time sugaring and you have been using razors, your first time will be your most uncomfortable session. As we will be pulling the hairs out from the follicles as opposed to when the hairs would be cut from the top when you shave. It’s important to note that everyone’s pain tolerance is different but most persons find sugaring to be more tolerable than waxing. This is because sugaring does NOT adhere to live skin and is removed in the direction of the hair growth. However, if you stay consistent with sugaring it will result in a more sparse and thinner growth.
Q: How can I prevent ingrown hairs?
A: Firstly, you should ensure that you are EXFOLIATING! You can use a dry brush, exfoliating gloves or scrub to remove dead skin cells buildup and reduce your new growth from being trapped. Secondly, you need to keep your skin MOISTURIZED. This allows your skin to be soft and supple for easier hair removal on your next appointment. After your appointment it is now on you to ensure that you are taking your home care regime seriously and remaining consistent.
Q: Can I get sugared while using Retin-A or Accutane?
A: Unfortunately, if you are using any of these topical products on your face we will not be able to proceed with sugaring. If you are on Accutane, you would need to pause for at least 6/7 months before we can sugar you. This can cause severe lifting of the skin and can cause scarring.
Facial and Body Treatments FAQS
Q: What is a facial?
A: A facial is a family of skin treatments for the face that includes steam, exfoliation, extractions, creams, treatment masks, peels and massage. Used for general skin health.
Q: What can I expect at my facial appointment?
A: Plan to arrive to your first appointment about 5-10 minutes early. You will need to fill out a form listing contact information, products being used at home, allergies and any medications that you are currently taking. Then, we will evaluate your skin using a magnifying lamp, ask you about your goals for your skin, and make a recommendation for skincare products and treatments to help you reach those goals.
Q: How often should I get a facial?
A: Generally, facials are recommended once a month. However, we can discuss your specific needs, desired outcomes and schedule together.
Q: Should I wear sun cream every day?
A: This is the MOST important piece of skincare advice we give to our clients. We cannot stress enough how important it is to wear sun protection daily, rain or shine. Wearing SPF is the key to preventing signs of ageing, and of course skin cancer. We recommend a minimum of SPF 30 and reapply every few hours if in direct sunlight.
Q: Do men get facials too?
A: Most definitely!!!!! Facials are very beneficial for men too and can help reduce skin sensitivity from shaving as well as other concerns from lack of proper home skincare routines. If you do suffer from sensitivity after shaving, it is recommended that you do not shave immediately before your facial, as this can lead to irritation.
Q: What are the benefits of getting a facial?
A: Regular facials can work wonders for your skin, enhancing its texture, tone, and overall appearance. They effectively unclog pores, stave off breakouts, and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Moreover, facials provide a soothing, luxurious experience that alleviates stress and boosts your mood.
